What checks are available?
Pre-Employ offers the following background checks:
- Social Security Number trace
- The Social Security Number (SSN) Trace searches the national credit bureaus to verify that the Social Security number is valid, matches the legal name given by the candidate, and returns all associated names, aliases, and counties on record. This includes counties in which the candidate previously lived, worked, or conducted financial transactions.

- Federal criminal court search
- This search scans across the 94 U.S. federal courts for violations of federal criminal law, including infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies. These include tax evasion, fraud, embezzlement, identity theft, interstate trafficking, and kidnapping.
- Statewide criminal court search
- This search scans criminal records at the state level, in a state of the employer's choice, and returns records that have been passed along to state-level courthouses.
- It accesses sources such as the State Judicial Court System, State Police, State Department of Law Enforcement, or the Administrative Office of the Courts. Records returned include infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies, such as DUIs, DWIs, assault, theft, and burglary.
- Results are guaranteed to find all records within 7 years, but may also find older records that are readily accessible.
- County criminal court search
- The search returns infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies, such as DUIs, DWIs, assault, theft, and burglary.
- The county check searches up to 3 counties: one based on the current address provided, and the other two based on the results of the SSN Trace. How far back the SSN trace goes depends on which search the employer purchased.
- There are two types of County Criminal Court Searches offered: the 7-Year County Check and the 10-Year County Check.
- The 7-Year County Check results are guaranteed to include records within 7 years, plus any records beyond that which are readily accessible.
- The 10-Year County Check results are also guaranteed to include records within 10 years, plus any records beyond that which are readily accessible.
- Sex offender registry search
- This search combs a sex offender registry spanning all U.S. states and territories. It includes hundreds of thousands of offender records nationwide.
- The search results include the states that the candidate has registered as a sex offender in. It does not include details about the committed offense.
- Employment verification
- Employment Verifications verify previous positions, including dates employed and job title.
- Employers can add up to 5 Employment Verifications to a single background report.
- Employment Verifications do not:
- Verify self-employment
- Provide entire employment history
- Include salary (due to some states' laws)
- Perform reference checks
- Education verification
- This search verifies attendance dates, majors, and degrees earned for any high school, college, university, or vocational school in the U.S.
- Employers can order up to 5 Education Verifications within the same background report.
- Each search contacts the school specified by phone up to three times over three (3) business days.
- Most degrees or certificates are verified by the institution’s Admissions and Records Office or Registrar. Some educational institutions use third-party verification services.
- Delays can occur if schools are closed during holidays and between terms.
- Education Verifications don’t reveal a candidate’s entire academic history, or provide transcripts or recommendations.
- Motor vehicle records check
- The MVR searches a given state's DMV to confirm if a driver's license is valid.
- It provides any driving-related violations and accidents, even if the candidate was not at fault.
- It shows the type of license the candidate has (e.g. Class C) and any endorsements.
- The MVR typically returns results that include anywhere from 3 to 10 years, depending on the state searched.
- Employment credit report
- The Employment Credit Check reports up to 7 years of history for credit information and up to 10 years of history for bankruptcies.
- This check reviews financial history insights, including:
- Notifications of bankruptcies
- Unpaid bills from collection agencies
- Credit and payment history records
- Other credit inquiries made on the candidate.
- The results include some or all of the following information:
- Names and addresses of current and previous employers
- Positions and dates of employment at current and previous employers
- Please note that an Employment Credit Report will not include the candidate's credit score.
- The Employment Credit Check reports up to 7 years of history for credit information and up to 10 years of history for bankruptcies.
- Healthcare sanctions
- This search scans various data sources to determine if an individual/entity is barred from participating in any federally-funded healthcare programs. Pre-employ offers 4 levels of Healthcare Sanctions.
- OIG Sanctions Search:
- Searches the Office of Inspector General's (OIG) of the US Department of Health and Human Resources’ list of Excluded Individuals/Entities.
- Sometimes, the OIG Sanctions Search will not show the violation or reason for the sanction.
- Level 1 Search:
- Searches all sources in the OIG search, plus other federal data sources, including GSA, DEA, FDA, PHS, ORI, TRICARE and OFAC-SDN.
- Equivalent to the FACIS Level 1 Search and meets the federal government’s minimum requirements as outlined in the OIG’s Compliance Program Guidance.
- Level 2 Search:
- Includes the same sources as Level 1, adding a search of State Medicaid Exclusion lists.
- Equivalent to the FACIS Level 2 Search.
- Please note that the State Medicaid Exclusion List does not include the following states: CO, DE, IN, NH, NM, OK, OR, RI, SD, UT, VT, VA.
- Level 3 Search:
- Includes all Level 2 sources, plus state Board Disciplinary Actions Sources and state Abuse Registries.
- Results returned will include the lists that the candidate has voluntarily put themselves on and the name of the source or board that took the disciplinary action.
- Results will also show the status of the sanction (either active or ended). Ended sanctions will also display the date ended.
- Results go back 7 years from the end of the sanction, or from present day if the sanction is active.
